Create a wildlife corridor near Newark, Notts

Come and have a fun day with us at Protect Earth!

What is happening?

We are planting a wildlife corridor 350m long to provide food and shelter for birds, mammals and other creatures, as well as creating a safe passage for them across what is now open ground. It will also serve to provide protection for pregnant ewes and newborn lambs from harsh winds and the worst of the cold and rain. In summer it will also provide shade.

Full details will be sent out the week before the event, including the address and meeting place. The pin here is a guide to the general area only. We will be just off the A46, north of Newark.

We appreciate volunteers who are able to come for part of the day, a whole day or even the whole weekend, and children are very welcome. We love it when the local community gets involved in their area, and also welcome guests from further away. It allows us to make new friends, catch up with friends we've made, and learn what people love about their communities while talking to them about enriching local biodiversity. Please do not bring your dog as there will be sheep and lambs in the field.

We will be planting a mixture of native trees to create a corridor for wildlife which will provide both food and shelter from the elements.

  • Where: near Newark, Nottinghamshire

  • Date: 09/03/24 - 10/03/24

  • Time: 10.00 - 16.00

What do I need?

We will provide tea, coffee, and biscuits to keep you going, but please bring your own lunch and snacks, and a refillable water bottle as there will be water available to top up.

Will there be parking?

  • There is on-site parking.

Whenever possible we encourage volunteers to car share, use public transportation, or even cycle, to keep emissions down and avoid stressing parking space.

What happens if Protect Earth needs to cancel?

Bad weather is difficult to plan for. In general, we will continue to plant if it’s raining, but if it’s looking dangerous or the ground is frozen we will have to cancel an event.

We will try and notify you as soon as we possibly can, and you’ll be invited to the rescheduled event.

Volunteers needed to plant 1050 trees and shrubs near Llanon, Ceredigion

Come and have a fun day planting native trees to extend the ancient woodland nearby.

What is happening?

Protect Earth is planting trees near Llanon, Ceredigion, Wales in February 2024.

This is a farm in West Wales lying on the edge of the extensive Cors Caranod Site of Special Scientific Interest. The landowner wants to plant trees on many areas of the farm, primarily to do something proactive to contribute to tackling the climate crisis.

We will be planting native trees and shrubs (mainly species already growing on site) mostly in drier botanically poor pasture areas, extending treelines and filling field corners. Increasing the tree cover will benefit various species already found on site including Tree Pipit, Redstart, Spotted Flycatcher and Willow Tit.

  • Where: near Llanon, Ceredigion

  • Date: 03.02.24 - 04.02.24

  • Time: 10.00 - 16.00

There are records of protected species from the site and others within 1km of the site including Water Vole, Badger, Otter, Barn Owl and other scarce species such as Bog Rosemary.

There is always lots of laughter and the satisfaction of helping the environment and reducing carbon.

When is this FREE event happening?

Protect Earth will be planting on two separate days:

  • Saturday, February 3rd,

  • Sunday, February 4th

We'll usually start the day around 10:00 a.m. with a brief introduction and demonstration on how to plant if you've not planted trees previously (spoiler - it's easy). The end of the day is usually 4:00 p.m. Children are welcome and do not need a ticket.

You can sign up for part of a day, a whole day, or all the days we'll be planting at this site. We love it when people come out; it gives us a chance to make new friends and share what people love about their communities while also talking to them about enhancing local wildlife.

What do I need?

No previous experience is necessary. We give a brief introduction and demonstrate what needs to be done, and all equipment is provided.

All you need to bring is appropriate clothing for the weather, sturdy boots and gloves and your own food and drink. Tea and coffee will also be available.

Car sharing is recommended for this event where possible as public transport in this area is poor. There is plenty of car parking available.

Full details, together with the address of this property, what3words location, etc. will be sent the week before the event. In the meantime, feel free to ask questions.

How do I confirm I'd like to go?

Small conifer removal at High Wood, Liskeard to aid natural regeneration

Restoring an ancient replanted woodland to a temperate rainforest involves making a little space for the natural saplings to recolonise.

  • Where: High Wood, near Liskeard, Cornwall

  • Date: 18.11.23 - 19.11.23

  • Time: 10.00 - 16.00

Come and help in the early stages of restoring High Wood to its former glory as a temperate rainforest.

Last Winter we began clearing and thinning some of the young conifers that had been planted just before we bought High Wood. We need to remove more of these conifers now whilst they are still small, to avoid having to wait 50 years before we can get on with the important work of restoring this woodland to benefit wildlife and carbon sequestration.

For decades High Wood has been managed as a commercial timber plantation, with Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, and Western Hemlock dominating the landscape. In order to give native species a chance to recolonise this ancient woodland we’ll need to make some space. The large conifers will be removed by professionals over the next few years.

That’s right, we’re going to be cutting down some trees! It might sound counter-intuitive, but this is all following advice from our ecologist and forester, folks at the Woodland Trust, and with permission from the Forestry Commission.

So why not come and enjoy a slightly different day out, helping us to remove these Christmas tree sized conifers. No experience is needed and tools will be provided. You can volunteer for a couple of hours, stay all day or even come on both days, it's up to you!

Full details will be sent out a week before the event, including the address and meeting place.

Thanks to the extremely generous donations of all sizes, Protect Earth is now the proud owner of a historic 64-acre ancient woodland known as High Wood, in Liskeard, Cornwall. High Wood has been woodland consistently since before 1600, and despite being used for commercial timber production for decades, it still retains an impressive amount of biodiversity and wildlife.

High Wood is an integral part of the Liskeard community, a place for serene dog walks, peaceful gatherings, and wildlife spotting, and Protect Earth is happy to say that will not change. Public access will stay a priority. The existing permissive footpaths will continue to be open, and there are plans to try and restore various footpaths connecting to High Wood that have been closed over the decades.

800 Trees to be planted near Tiverton, Devon

Help us plant British saplings near Tiverton to provide a habitat for local wildlife and sequester carbon dioxide.

Protect Earth is a reforestation charity that helps plant the right trees in the right place, when government grants fail to help land owners reforest. We work with local climate action groups and volunteers so we can all do this on a shoestring budget, and save the planet a little bit every week.

We are going to be planting 800 trees of the following species: Alder, Aspen, Goat Willow, Pendunculate Oak, Downy Birch, Hornbeam, Small-leaved Lime, Rowan, Wild Cherry and Field Maple.

Things we ask that you bring if possible:

  • A spade - a small border spade or a fencing spade / drainage shovel (which have a narrow/pointed blade) are ideal for tree planting. A large spade is ok, too.

  • Gardening gloves - the sturdier the better

  • Sturdy footwear - preferably boots or wellies

  • Plenty of food and water

  • Hand sanitiser

We'll send out more information closer to the time about how and where parking works, but we always appreciate anyone who can uses trains/bikes/etc to ease parking on the farm, and of course reduce emissions!

Tree Planting: 960 Trees to be planted in Cardigan, West Wales

Help us plant local native Welsh saplings to provide a habitat for local wildlife and sequester carbon dioxide.

Protect Earth is a reforestation charity that helps plant the right trees in the right place, when government grants fail to help land owners reforest. We work with local climate action groups and volunteers so we can all do this on a shoestring budget, and save the planet a little bit every week.

We are going to be planting 1,000 trees, predominately Oak species, rather than Hazel to help maintain the woodland characteristic of Mid/West-Wales,but with a high diversity of other tree species to maximise biodiversity. There are many Beech trees thriving in the local area, which we will also be bolstering by planting more. Surrounding the woodland will be a shrub layer to provide good woodland-edge habitat, and planted with species that provide good sources of nectar, pollen and berries for wildlife.

Things we ask that you bring if possible:

  • A spade - a small border spade or a fencing spade / drainage shovel (which have a narrow/pointed blade) are ideal for tree planting. A large spade is ok, too.

High Wood regenerative thinning

Help us tactically prune trees in Liskeard, to better provide a habitat for local wildlife and sequester carbon dioxide.

Help us in Liskeard in Cornwall.

Come and help Protect Earth begin the decades long job of restoring High Wood to its former glory as a temperate rainforest.

To start we’ll be clearing and thinning some of the young conifers that were planted recently, to avoid having to wait 50 years before we can get on with the important work of restoring this woodland to benefit wildlife and carbon sequestration.

For decades High Wood has been managed as a commercial timber plantation, with Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, and Western Hemlock dominating the landscape. In order to give native species a chance to recolonise this ancient woodland we’ll need to make some space.

That’s right, we’re going to be cutting down some trees! It might sound counter-intuitive, but this is all following advice from our ecologist and forester, folks at the Woodland Trust, and with permission from the Forestry Commission.

So come along, bring your friends, and maybe pick yourself a Christmas tree in the process!

Belmont Bamboo Bash

to 9 Jul

Belmont Bamboo Bash

Several homeowners in the village of Belmont (near Bolton) got in touch wanting to get rid of the bamboo that is taking over their gardens and their public space.

Many of them have tried to remove the bamboo over the years, but unless every single above ground stem is removed it will always come back, as the leaves are creating energy for the entire network.

With your help we can smash the whole lot, at once, and dig up a lot of the roots and rhizome to disturb the network of enough that it can no longer send up new shoots, like a battery that has run out of energy.

Once the bamboo is removed, the stems can be cut into 1 meter segments, which we can use when we're planting trees! We use bamboo to hold up our biodegradable rabbit guards, and improve the survival rate of our saplings. Harvesting invasive bamboo saves us importing farmed bamboo from China, reducing our reliance on imports, and the emissions associated with its production and transport.

What to bring

Things we ask that you bring if possible:

  • Seceteurs/loppers - only if you have them

  • Gardening gloves - the sturdier the better

  • Sturdy footwear - preferably boots or wellies

  • A packed lunch

  • Hand sanitiser

We'll provide you with some tea, coffee, and hopefully some COVID-19 safe snacks.

Safety

We'll be working with seceteurs, loppers, machetes, mattocks, and other sharp tools, so this event is sadly not family friendly, nor would we recommend bringing pets. Tree planting events later in the year will be more appropriate for little-uns and pets.

The event will be covered by public liability insurance and will give safety announcements so everyone knows what they're doing.

High Street, Belmont, BL7 8AY
