FREE hedge laying course for farmers near Newtown, Powys

Protect Earth is a registered charity, helping farmers and landowners increase tree cover and biodiversity on their land. We plant trees on unused and degraded farmland, use trees to provide shade and shelter for crops and livestock, create wildflower meadows, and help with tree maintenance for saplings that are struggling. We also remove invasive species and offer courses such as this one.

We want to support farmers so we are running a FREE one-day hedge laying course for farmers. Gardeners, hobbyists, and anyone else interested are also welcome at the cost of £50 for the day. Learn how to restore your hedgerow in a sustainable way from an experienced trainer, and have fun at the same time. We’ll lay the hedge “Conservation Style” which doesn’t use stakes or binders and also makes use of the brash to minimise waste. You will be shown how to make stakes in case you need them in high wind areas.

There are so many advantages in a properly laid hedge:

· It provides protection from the elements for livestock which keeps them happy.

· Reduce the need for fences to fill in the gaps so it saves money and keeps livestock safe.

· It’s environmentally friendly as it provides food and shelter for wildlife and a safe corridor for them to move around the countryside.

· It looks so much better than a hastily flailed hedge which damages plants.

What do I need to bring/ know?

No previous experience is necessary and we provide all the necessary equipment. You may bring your own tools if you prefer. Please come dressed for the weather, including waterproofs.

We will provide tea, coffee, and biscuits to keep you going, but please bring your own lunch and snacks, and a refillable water bottle as there will be water available to top up.

Map links will be emailed to course participants.

Will there be parking?

  • There is parking nearby.
  • A bus runs to the village
  • A cycle route passes by the village

Whenever possible we encourage you to car share, use public transportation, or even cycle, to keep emissions down and avoid stressing parking space.

What happens if we need to cancel?

Bad weather is difficult to plan for. In general, we will continue if it’s raining, but if a severe storm is forecast we will have to postpone the event. We will try and notify you as soon as we possibly can, and you’ll be invited to the rescheduled event.
