Scything help needed, beginners welcome. Bath, Somerset

Introduction
Come and have a fun day scything our grassland on 29th or 30th August at Warleigh Nature Reserve, Bath! It’s very satisfying and we would love to meet you.
Protect Earth is a registered charity, creating a new nature reserve by developing its woodlands, wetlands and grasslands. We also help farmers and landowners increase tree cover and biodiversity on their land. We plant trees on unused and degraded farmland, use trees to provide shade and shelter for crops and livestock, remove invasive species, create wildflower meadows, and help with tree maintenance for saplings that are struggling.
What is happening?
We need to cut our grasslands before the end of the season and need all the help we can get! If you are a beginner we can lend you a scythe and show you how to use it safely. If you have your own scythe, please bring it with you as we only have a few at the moment.
This a free event. Please choose a ‘with scythe’ ticket if you are bringing your own scythe or a ‘without scythe’ ticket if you need to borrow one of ours. This will make sure that we have enough scythes for everyone who needs one.
We also have two evening sessions from 6pm to 8pm on 25th and 27th August. Please email us at help@protect earth for parking details or to reserve a scythe if you would like to come.
What do I need to bring/ know?
- Gardening gloves - the sturdier the better (We have a few pairs you can borrow)
- Sturdy footwear - preferably boots
- Weather appropriate clothing – perhaps a hat. We recommend long sleeves and trousers as there can be ticks and other insects in the grass.
- Plenty of food and water in a refillable water bottle
- Insect repellent/sun cream/hand sanitiser
We will provide tea, coffee, and biscuits to keep you going, but please bring your own lunch and snacks, and a refillable water bottle as there will be water available to top up.
We have a compost toilet onsite.
There is on-site parking.
Whenever possible we encourage volunteers to car share, use public transport, or even cycle, to keep emissions down and avoid stressing parking space.
What happens if we need to cancel?
Bad weather is difficult to plan for. If we do have to postpone an event we will notify you as soon as we possibly can, and you’ll be invited to the rescheduled event.
Please let us know if you need to cancel so that we can offer your place to someone else.
