Moat Farm

Frome, Somerset

Moat farm was a small tenanted dairy farm on the Somerset levels and forms a part of a larger property. The new owners are keen to undo the impacts of decades of intensive farming, and to establish a new sustainable future for the site. They have already begun the process of rewilding the wider property with the aim of achieving significantly increased biodiversity.

The first part of the plan for this site will involve planting an optimal shelterbelt (OSB) which reduces wind and creates an agricultural microclimate whilst taking up minimal farming land.

Tree Planting
1,200 trees planted

From time to time we support FWAG South West by providing funding for the trees and volunteers to help plant them. At this farm we helped to plant a 550 metre shelterbelt over two days using 1200 mixed trees and shrubs, strip mulch matting, stakes and guards. Trees were planted as bare rooted 40-60cm whips and were protected with 1.2m tree tubes and stakes in clusters of the same species, randomly spaced. The shrubs were protected with 75cm shrub guards and stakes. Random gaps were left to provide open areas in the woodland.
