Hazeland Wood
Calne, Wiltshire
The brilliant Avon Needs Trees were hard at work creating a new woodland, and they did in fact need some trees. We helped add 1,000 trees to this beautiful 34 acre site n the Marden Valley between Chippenham and Calne. Both of these towns have been hit by floods in recent years and planting in the high catchment area helps protect all the other towns and cities downstream, including Melksham, Bradford-on-Avon, Bath and Bristol.
The first batch of trees in 2021 used entirely cardboard guards from Grown Green, and this year Avon Needs Trees used Tubex Nature Guards which are biodegradeable plastic. This site has been developed after consultation with local universities and Woodland Trust, and this has led to extremely productive experiments with different mulching techniques etc.
Site Updates
From time to time we join forces with other environmental charities such as Avon Needs Trees as we all have the same aim and many hands make light work.
Early April is the very last opportunity to plant trees for the season before they start trying to grow, so we were keen to plant these 400 saplings as soon as possible. Grass could be a problem here in the lower paddock, likely to grow and overwhelm the young saplings, so we used biodegradable mulch mats and pegs to suppress it as much as possible.
Having planted trees here last year, we returned to help Avon Need Trees plant a further 900 saplings, this time in the upper paddock. We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny February day which was unseasonably warm, and some very hardworking volunteers, to get the job done.
