Working in partnership with the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) our team led a group of volunteers to plant a shelterbelt on this farm. The weather was wet, but spirits were high, and everyone set to with a will.
Shelterbelts are normally several rows of trees and shrubs forming a barrier to provide protection from the weather for crops and livestock which in turn increases productivity. It was decided that only trees were necessary for this particular shelterbelt. FWAG like to use a continuous membrane to suppress weeds rather than mulch mats or wood chippings. It is quick and easy to lay, and is very effective.
As it was half-term one 7-year-old came with his mum and did an excellent job. Children are always welcome at our tree planting events as we feel that the sooner children become involved in helping the environment the better. Everyone worked hard and we were able to complete the shelterbelt in one day.
