Carradel Farm

Carradel Farm is situated overlooking the Ribble Estuary with low-lying ground and salt marshes between it and the river. With few trees to protect them from the cold winds blowing in from the sea the owners of this small family farm wanted to plant some trees on their own property, which would also help to improve biodiversity in the area. They had 1,300 trees from the Woodland Trust but were rather overwhelmed at the prospect of planting so many, so they approached us for some advice. This was no problem for us, of course, and we offered to find volunteers to get the job done.

Tree Planting
1,600 trees planted

Initially, 1300 trees were planned for this 2.47 acres area, both to provide protection from the cold winds and to create a woodland to increase biodiversity on this farm. Once we had visited the site it was decided that an extra 300 were needed for extra protection, bringing the total to 1600. The landowners were very keen, but lacked the manpower to plant so many trees.

Finding volunteers is something Protect Earth does well and we managed to find plenty for the job, some of them hairdressers from the local area. The landowners marked out a few open areas in advance, then the trees were spaced at random with tight groups thinning to scattered shrub towards the edge of the woodland to give the woodland a ‘natural’ look.

We anticipated taking two days over this task but these volunteers were absolutely phenomenal and planted the whole lot in only one day. The landowners were thrilled!
