Protect Earth Joins Forces with 1% for the Planet for Environmental Impact

Goal, goals, goals. We typically look at businesses and think they aim to make more money and avoid paying taxes as much as possible, selfishly and destructively keeping everything for themselves. Of course, there are bad apples who do. But then there’s the other one per cent. 1% for the Planet that is. It’s an organisation that sees companies tithe one per cent of their annual sales to environmental activities, meaning charities like Protect Earth can tap into additional support to develop more biodiversity in the UK.

Protect Earth has recently been approved as an environmental partner, so participating companies can pledge part or all of their 1% contributions to Protect Earth. This will help us drive our goals for new land management and ownership.

Let’s look at 1% for the Planet, when it started, what it has achieved, and why we felt partnering with 1% would benefit the Protect Earth community.

What is 1% for the Planet?

1% for the Planet is an organisation working worldwide. Its members contribute at least one per cent of their annual sales to environmental causes.

Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia and author of Let My People Go Surfing (we have recommended this book before. It’s well worth a read), was fishing with his friend Craig Mathews, discussing how companies profit from the resources they take from the earth, so they should protect those resources. 1% for the Planet was born and has gone on to do tremendous good.

In essence, 1% for the Planet is like a meeting place. Organisations that want to be more responsible but don’t know how or where to start (choice is overwhelming for everyone) at least have some reassurance that 1% for the Planet has undertaken due diligence when approving environmental partners.

The organisation has given $583 million to aid environmental creation and protection. That money was tithed by 5,400 companies, recognising that bottom-line profitability isn’t the only measure of success. And the money was distributed to over 6,500 environmental organisations, all looking to make planet earth a better, more balanced space for everything that calls it home. Protect Earth has joined the ranks as one of those 6,500 environmental partners now working with 1% for the Planet.

Protect Earth and 1% for the Planet

Protect Earth are excited to join the ranks of this organisation as our community continues growing and growing more ecology in the meantime.

For us to achieve our goals of managing more land and truly developing landscapes that make a difference for people and nature in the UK comes with a cost. In the same vein that environmental partners are vetted based on their values, history, and competency, equally, Protect Earth can be assured that donations from participating companies come with a sincere wish to prioritise planet health.

We will continue to be an ethically responsible community, and the transparency that 1% for the Planet provides will help us avoid greenwashing companies or organisations doing even worse than greenwashing.

To sum up

This partnership between Protect Earth and 1% for the Planet is another step towards achieving our goals of sustainable land management and ecological development in the UK.

Together, we start a journey towards a healthier, more eco-conscious future.
